Hey guys, I would like to know how is the best way to draft players other than just looking at the needs on your roster. Last season I drafted someone number one overall at 86 overall but now he is at 66 overall. Just sad :(. Please help me avoid these mistakes again. Thanks

It would appear your first round pick was a bust. It's important to pay attention to volatility. A player with high vol has the opportunity to go either way in training camp (big boom or big bust). A player with low vol will remain, more or less, the same in terms of attributes as when you drafted him.

I'd also suggest playing around with custom player weights. Not every attribute is important to each position (i.e. strength is more important for lineman than wide receivers). There are plenty of guides for that in the general forums.

These are my personal draft thoughts, but any pick you have in the first two rounds should almost always pick fast skill players(WR/RB/LB/DB). My personal preference is players who will have at least 80 speed when they reach their positional weight. The only exception to this is if there is a lineman with less than 20 vol who has stud intangibles (speed/acceleration/strength) to go with great run blocking/pass blocking(85+ for both). In the third and fourth round, I target high vol lineman who have the best intangibles available. You can still grab skill players if there are some that are still available. In the last three rounds, you can generally grab depth and the occasional starter. This is where you should grab only high vol players, in my opinion, as these late round picks with high vol will boom more due to their draft position.

The reasoning behind this strategy is that skill players are simply more impactful than lineman on both sides of the ball so you should use your premium picks on them. As far as volatility, I don't pay attention to it as generally there are not enough low vol options and a high vol booming player will be a better player anyways. It is risky taking high vol players and is disappointing when they bust, however you can get great draft value and more starting caliber players if you get lucky during a draft. Edit: Just to add some more context to this strategy for player evaluation, the most important positions to me are DB>WR>TE>LB>RB>OL>DL mostly based on their play impact, difference between high skill/low skill, and difficulty in filling the positions with high skill starters.
