Stating the obvious - offenses need help

I run an exploit-free (as much as possible) league and have just run a quick scoring comparison of our last 5 seasons versus the NFL at 20 year intervals.

This is average points score per team :

MFN 2026 - 14.48
MFN 2025 - 13.94
MFN 2024 - 13.33
MFN 2023 - 13.71
MFN 2022 - 12.64 (our foundation season)

NFL 2022 - 21.9
NFL 2000 - 20.7
NFL 1980 - 20.5
NFL 1960 - 21.6
NFL 1940 - 15.2

Now, the ineffectiveness of the long pass is widely documented already, but by this reckoning all teams are underscoring to the tune of a touchdown a game.

I'd be interested in seeing any numbers from other leagues - particularly those who allow out-of-position, min/max play and other engine exploits.

USFL averaged 17.56 ppg per team in the most recent completed season. 9093 points for 256 games is 35.12 per game combined. We were a full league that allows whatever, no roster restrictions.

Seth just posted a great passing breakdown on the community help forum. Very useful. Exploit free? You will absolutely need an elite tight end to get more production.

Seth's guide would fall under exploiting (hence the thread title he's chosen). It's cookie-cutter building. Our definitions of useful clearly vary as it's that kind of information, as much as it's posted with good intent, that wrecks the game. Why bother learning how to play in your own way when you can copy and paste and win all the time - except you won't, because everyone else is doing the exact same thing.

Fastest way to strip the fun from the game, IMHO.

Two points were missed from my post.

1. There are other ways to play the game, but these plays are the only short passing plays with big play potential. The title is more a play on the arguments in 4.5 that the hitch was cheating because it was truly broken.

2. Since these are the only short passing plays with big play potential, good owners will have found them all eventually if they haven't already. This allows new owners to cheat the learning curve.

That said there are a lot of offenses that utilize medium passing in ways that I don't use or even advise, but are highly successful.

I prefer volume passing and runs, which means I mostly look at short passes and need to know where the big play potential is.
