FS and SS roles

With our playbooks, how are these two positions generally used? Is one better suited for run support? Generally higher zone coverage?

I would say generally yes but it’s up to you on what you like. You can make either do whatever you want. Still in general there are more plays that have the FS covering the 3rd option and the SS covering the 4th but that only if you take into consideration all the plays.

As in man schemes they line up head up on potential targets giving them different run fits and the blitzes have them coming from a predestined spot. So for run stuffing it kinda scheme as well.

And zone is zone I like a deep one a lot two deep on passing downs and manning up on run downs or sets. So depending on what skills I have to work with I might override a switch of them just to highlight their skills. Only because I like the run fits of the dline or LBs.

It’s kinds like SLB and WLb ....both can go both ways depending on the play call or matchups. I clearly have a preference but it may not be better it’s just what I like to apply in those scenarios.

Of late more specialized towards the beta code . Personally I like my FS to be an all round type DB. Jack of all trades type. And the SS is in zone a bit more. But he will man up a lot on RBs so speed is more important. Again that speed helps get to that deep zone so clearly it’s important for both . Really my SS is an even more rangy mlb. But again both those positions can be set to man up on the 3rd option which could be a WR. Elite ones can handle that responsibility

Generally SS is run support and FS is zone but like I posted above it doesn’t need to be that way and it’s not so beneficial due to the dline and LBer run gap stopping responsibilities.

As a tackle 10 yards downfield is way worse than a 1-3 yarder. Even if the guy get a lot of them and misses a few. And zone rarely draws any throw ats so another stat that might be hard to gauge.

With my schemes I can get a FS to have 20 + knock downs and 8 interceptions in one season... ala Ed reed or whatever . If I can get a dozen knockdowns out of my SS that’s good and 3 or 4 picks. But my SS will be the tackle machine

Personlly, I prefer an SS to have Strength, Tackle ability and run defense - speed is less of a factor here for me but I know others disagree on that. A free safety I like to have enough speed to cover side to side, I also want him to have strip ball and punish receiver.

For both I prefer zone coverage to m2m, but I play a fair bit of 1 deep or 2 deep man
