Would take a ton of work, but what I'd like is a "6 Edition Scouting Mag".
Rolls out in Pre-Season, then the End of Week 4, Week 8, Week 12 and Week 16. 6th Edition comes out After Play Offs.
Guys would move up and down depending on Volatility (Low Vol would be consistent, High Vol would hop up and down) and Current, and then the Final 'Combine Edition' after the Play Offs would be weighted towards Total. So for 5 Mags it focuses on the combination of Current and Volatility, with Final changing to the 'well, we measured all there is to measured and all the film is watched' Total.
That way, if you 'decided' to Tank because of Player X... you are doing it based off the very first Scouting Mag... and that can be VERY different than the 6th Scouting Mag.
There could be some system to it... like the Early Mags look into the 'Flexible' Skills. Then the later ones add on the 'Locked' Skills, like SPD, STR, ACC and other things that don't change.
So Mag 1 you'd be going off a CB based on Volatility, Punish Receiver, and Current. Vol 2 would add ZC and M2M. Vol 3 would add Tackle. Vol 4 would add STR. Vol 5 would add ACC. Vol 6 would add SPD, and shift from Current to Total Overall.
Obviously, doing it this way... the #1 CB at the Vol 1 would just be a Vol High guy that 'flipped high' that turn, with the best Punish Receiver and Current. But every week it changes (did he 'flip low', have a 'bad game'? Does his ZC ****, or his M2M?
And you wouldn't know which... so if he takes a hit in Week 2, maybe you only run M2M with your CBs... well, which did he drop at? The one you need? So do you STILL tank?
The only real thing that could be truly found by using a fine tooth comb on all 6 Magazines would be Consistency. If a guy was Top 5 the entire time, you'll know he's got a Low Vol so he won't bust, and every step of the way the more that was unlocked the more that was good.
So I think this would slow people down on Tanking for a Star, because the #1 Guy in Vol 1 might be the 198th guy in Vol 6, but it WOULD give us something to look at and start our decisions with.
I mean, if a guy is going to tank, he's going to tank. He decides he's not good enough and the only chance is to bet the house on the #1 Overall Lotto. But I don't think this method would encourage it more, because while he'd have SOME info, he's still shooting in the Dark at Vol 1. Because really if he's Tanking, he's already 'believing' his Champion is going to be there.
So it would take some work, and maybe it could be limited to the Top 3 Rounds, so the first 100 (well, 96 to be strict about it) Non-P/K Players at that time, or maybe the Top 10 at every Position (QB, WR, RB, TE, OT, OG, OC, DE, DT, OLB, ILB, CB, FS, SS, K/P) so 150 Players per Mag if we do it Top 10 By Position. Either would be cool, and limit the huge amount of Players actually put into it and shipped out (though the entire Class needs to be ready, since that's where we get these guys from).
Again, would be a HUGE effort, but I think it would be a huge value as well.
