Volatility can affect rating changes but aside from that, it is a **** shoot. Older veterans get crushed at times as well; I had two of them drop 7 for instance.
Training camp is a double -edged sword as you can hit it big at time too. It is a cool part of the game IMO with some unknown, but it sucks when you get stung
