he only has 1yr on his contract so he'd be a free agent next season. Makes him tough to trade for

You can re-sign him before he becomes a free agent.

I know that I have the option of resigning him right now. I would assume if he was traded the new team would have the same option.

For what it's worth, I just traded for a player in MFN1, and I'm able to offer a new contract.

Yes, you will be able to re-sign a traded player in the final year of his contract (as long as it wasn't a 1-year deal).
